Bringing your new baby home is pretty exciting. To many people, bringing home a new puppy is like bringing home a new baby. Their puppy is their baby. It is important to have all the little puppy things your new little guy will need to make him a happy puppy. It is also important to hold the moral name for him. Everyone wants to engage the name that will match their puppy’s personality, or rather, the personality they hope their puppy will have when it grows up.

After a great deal of research I think I have found the top ten names for both boy and girl dogs. I have listed them in order according to popularity

BOY

1 Max – this is a tough guy. I picture a German Shepherd when I think of Max.

2 Jake – Jake sounds like a Labrador Retriever that will be a good friend. Who knows what has made this name so current, but it is a name that has been in the favorites for many years.

3 Buddy – this name makes me deem if a medium size dog that will run around and play with you all day. This will be the kind of dog that follows you all day just to be where you are. You know, like a buddy would. I can’t help but think the movie Buddy may have had something to do with the popularity of this name. The dog in the movie was such a good “buddy”; hopefully those who determine this name will have the same luck.

4 Rusty – when I think of the name Rusty, it makes me remember my little red Cocker Spaniel.

5 Harley – this name has to go on a tough guy dog. Why, because if he is a Harley he has a reputation to acquire. I think this is definitely a tremendous dog name, a Ridgeback maybe? I have to think this is a favorite name among Harley Davidson lovers. I can’t imagine someone with a Honda or a Yamaha naming his or her dog Harley!

6 Rocky – the name Rocky makes me think of a fast little dog, like perhaps a Cairn Terrier. The movie Rocky helped move this name up the list. It is also the reason I think of a mercurial exiguous dog when I hear the name. You know, fast little guy, jumping around, dodging punches.

7 Jack – As hard as I try, I keep picturing a Jack Russell Terrier. It’s too easy, but I think it is the perfect name for your Jack!

8 Bailey – this is a shrimp dog name. Perfect in my opinion for a small Poodle.

9 Sam – this could be everyone’s dog, any dog. A Sam is just a Sam. You know it when you get one. Not that they are ordinary, to quite the contrary. I deem a Sam is a special dog that loves to play. Whether it is Frisbee or chasing you though the water. No doubt, you will know if your dog is a Sam!

10 Duke – this is another big dog name. Big dogs, tough dogs, like a Rhodesian Ridgeback. This name mane me think of John Wayne, and no one messed with him either!

GIRL

1 Maggie – I see a little, black Scottish Terrier. This name sounds perfect for a itsy-bitsy Scottish girl. Do you think Rod Stewart has a little Terrier named Maggie?

2 Sadie – when I think of a Sadie I think of a mellow dog. She will be just a sweet dog that wants to be everyone’s friend. She would be perfect with our Sam! Sadie sounds like a large dog to me. She sounds like a dog that would love to run through the fields with you, and play Frisbee on the beach. Sadie sounds like a girl that likes to have fun. Labrador Retriever

3 Lady – No doubt about it, Lady and the Tramp. This is definitely a name for a Dalmatian! After seeing this movie could you give this name to any other kind of dog? Well, yes, if your dog is prissy and has no spots, I guess you could!

4 Daisy – now who would not want a Daisy and no, I do not mean Daisy Duke. However, the name Daisy does construct me think of a pretty little girl doggie that is always getting into some kind of difficulty. Like my Cairn Terrier?

5 Lucy – Well, I love Lucy…it makes me think of a little red haired Poodle. How about you?

6 Coco – Christina Aguilera has named her Bull Mastiff KoKo. To me this sounds more like a little foo-foo dog’s name. You know, one of those sweet little things you put in your purse like a bottle of Coco Chanel?

7 Ginger – any little tiny red haired doggie would make a top-notch Ginger! Kind of like a Sam. You just know when you’ve got one!

8 Sasha – can you say Afghan?

9 Princess – oh, the prissy little girl that runs the house, goes by the nick-named Princess Diva? This has got to be a Poodle!

10 Missy – this is the perfect name for the sweet little girl that jumps up in your lamp every time you sit down. Any kind of lap dog.

Occupy your time and pick the right name for your itsy-bitsy friend…

Border Collies are working dogs. To be entertained they need a job to do. If you don’t keep your Border Collie entertained, he will find his possess work, such as herding your kids, or chewing your house apart. Bored dogs turn to destructive behavior to amuse themselves and to bag your attention. Luckily, there are a lot of fun ways you and your Border Collie can exercise time together. That’s right, before you bought that Border Collie, you hopefully factored in a lot of free time to spend with him!

Sheep herding

Border Collies are born sheep herders. Often, Border Collies will try to herd children or other dogs by nipping and growling. Allotment of your Border Collie’s training should be to teach him the appropriate behavior to exhaust around children and other pets. If you and your Border Collie begin sheep herding, he will be smart enough to learn the incompatibility between sheep and children, and unexcited get to use his natural herding instincts.

Training your dog to herd sheep will be difficult, but rewarding for both of you. You will have a happy dog that is very responsive to many commands. When you are getting started, you may have a friend or local farmer who will let your borrow a few sheep to practice with. Before you start working with sheep, make sure your dog is well trained in other basic commands. If you get into sheep herding as a sport, you may end up buying your own sheep! You can buy books and DVDs to learn about training your dog to be a sheepdog.

Agility

Border Collies are born champions in agility trials. Agility requires that the dog run an obstacle course. Obstacles include weaving between poles, jumping, climbing a see-saw, and running through tunnels. Border Collies are fast and intelligent, making them perfect candidates for this sport. Agility will keep you in shape, along with your Border Collie, as the owners run alongside the dog in the game.

Agility requires a great deal of communication between owner and dog. The dog will not know which order to approach the obstacles in without human direction. However, the human handler may not touch the dog or the obstacles. You will have to train your Border Collie to respond to insist and gestured commands only.

Flyball

Flyball is a team game for dogs. There are four dogs per Flyball team, and the game works like a relay race. The dogs have to run to a box that holds a spring-loaded tennis ball. There are hurdles in the way that the dog must clear without errors. When they reach the box, they must operate the mechanism to release a tennis ball. The dog must collect the tennis ball, then hasten serve over the hurdles to the starting line. When the dog crosses the starting line, the next dog on his team may go.

Flyball is fun and competitive. It will give your dog a chance to stay in shape and be a champion! To learn more about the rules and how to find a Flyball team, visit www.flyballdogs.com.

If you have decided you want to get to procure a Golden Retriever, and know that you either don’t have the time or desire to deal with the struggles of raising, and potty training, a puppy, than a better option would be to adopt an older dog. The benefit of doing so would mean the dog would be more mature, and possibly already house trained. Older dogs, especially Golden Retrievers, would be better off in a situation where they would need to be left home alone for long periods of time during the day.

At times, breeders may be looking to find a home for an older Golden Retriever. A few reasons for breeders wanting to re home one of their older dogs can be that they have decided to retire a female from breeding, or that they have a show dog that, for whatever reason, cannot be primitive for shows anymore. Of course, they may just be trying to find a home for a dog that belongs to a friend, or it may be another reason all together.

Golden Retrievers that have passed the puppy stage of their life, may have been through training, such as general commands or house training. When you bring an older dog into a new home, they might not understand what is going on at first. They may be wondering why they are with you and not their original owner, and might take some patience and reassurance before being completely comfortable in your home. As long as you are patient and loving, the fresh addition to your family will learn that you are his new owner, and will be just as happy to be with you as you are him.

Once you have decided you want to adopt, and you know what dog you want to adopt, you should look into it’s history if you can. Learn everything possible about the dog, such as his medical history, what commands he knows, and what his temperament is. You will need to let everyone in your household know that you are looking to adopt a dog, to ensure they are OK with it. If you have small children in your home, than a rambunctious dog that is full of energy may not be right for you. Learning what type of food he eats, as well as how often and how much he eats is another important thing you should gawk into.

An older dog is going to take time to relax and learn the ways of your house. He will need to be introduced to his bed, or crate, as well as his food and water bowls. After a few days your new dog will become accustomed to how things are in your home, and should fit in dazzling. Some dogs may assume longer than others so you will need to be patient.

If your adopted dog already knows some commands, you may want to keep teaching him them, and new commands. This will strengthen your bond with him, and ensure that he knows that he needs to listen to you now. You should wait at least a month to do this though. Giving your dog enough time to regain comfortable will make it easier to continue with his training and teach him new commands you want him to know.

When you bring a Golden Retriever into your home, make sure you can provide lots of like and attention. No matter how old your new addition is, they will always desire your attention. If you do adopt, you may come across medical troubles. Whether you knew about them before you adopted or not. However, this is not something that should determine your adopting. As long as you are financially able to take care of the dog, and can provide the treasure it needs, you will be impartial as happy with one that is sick, as you would with one that is healthy.

The labrador retriever makes a incredible pet.No wonder it has been the most popular breed in the United States for several years including 2008. Labs are big, profitable dogs that are rotund of life. Labs originated in Newfoundland but, there was already a breed named Newfoundland. This breed loved to swim, and level-headed does, so it was named after the Labrador Sea. This dog is very versatile and the only breed with webbed paws. They can swim at 3 miles an hour. That is twice the speed that a duck swims! Labs have great stamina.

Labs come in three different colors and they can all be born from the same litter. Black is the most common color. There is also yellow and the rarest color is chocolate. There have been silver labs showing up in litters but, they are not recognized by the AKC yet.

This is a wonderful breed for adults, young and primitive or children, as they are very gentle and are a very improper bite risk. However they are protective of their families and tend to be very intuned to them as well. Labs bond very, very strongly with humans and vise versa! They are intelligent creatures, who can remember an astonishing three hundred human phrases. This makes them easy dogs to train. When they are puppies they must be taught to be careful with their teeth.

The labrador retriever is prone to eye defects as well as hip, knee, and elbow problems. Twelve to thirteen years is the expected life span for this breed. They love and thrive in cold weather but are very adaptable. The lab is a prominent dog in the horror novels of Dean Koontz. It is clear he is a lover of the breed. He definitely is not alone in that love. Many people feel that this is a super special, almost human breed. If you decide on a lab as a pet, you will need to see that he or she has plenty of room to run and glide and plenty of love.

The Wolf-dog Cross is the offspring of a wolf and a dog. This reference is passed down to offspring up to five generations from the chunky blooded wolf. Often these animals are called wolfdogs and they continue to be called wolf dog hybrids though they are no longer scientifically classified as such. A hybrid is the offspring of two animals from different species, such as the mule which has a donkey father and a horse mother. These animals are usually infertile and can not produce additional offspring of their kind. Even in rare instances where the female has been fertile the males are not, so any additional breeding is done with a pure blood animal. This is not the case with wolf dogs. In 1993 dogs were classified as a subspecies of wolf, making the dog and wolf closer genetically then different species. Additionally their offspring are fertile and can breed with other dogs, wolves, or with each other producing other healthy offspring.

While the wolfdog isn’t a hybrid it is usually considered a wild animal. This is argued by advocates for the ownership of wolfdogs all over the world, and especially in the United States. However, wolves are not domesticated making their offspring wild. This is not to say that wolf dogs are bad, although there is a great deal of controversy over owning them as pets.

Here we will discuss a little bit about wolfdogs as pets, their history in different breeds, their existence in the wild, and their future. All of these things are important and often this is a misunderstood creature. People either fear wolves and wolfdogs, or the don’t understand them and desire them as “pets”.

Wolfdogs as Pets

Many wolfdog owners and breeders will tell you that they love their wolfdogs. In the next sentence they will often tell you that wolfdogs make abominable pets. How can this be? Well, the answer is a complicated one. It is believed by the owners of these sparkling animals that wolfdogs make great companions, but abominable pets. Those desiring a pet are usually looking for something low maintenance. Something that will be easy to command and easy to walk on a leash. However, the personality of the wolfdog make it a high maintenance animal. It has a lot of special needs and you need to understand it before buying it. Many animals end up in rescues because people got a wolfdog thinking it was just a cool dog, when in reality it was part wolf!

Wolfdog ownership should be allowed, however regulation of such ownership should be done. In many places this is done by simply outlawing the creatures. They are misunderstood, thought to be dangerous, which they often are in the wicked hands. In order to buy a wolfdog you should know what to request and you should consider it before doing so. If you think you might want to own a wolfdog, then read the article Things to Consider Before Buying a Wolfdog.

Wolf Blood

It is difficult to understand when dogs and wolves separated their ways and became different subspecies. It is believed that wolves have bred with dog for thousands, maybe even hundreds of thousands of years, or more. There is evidence that wolfdogs were used by many different cultures long before ours. Some evidence even points back as far as the days of hunting woolly mammoths. Many breeds show a great deal of evidence of wolf blood in their history. However, to be classified as a mixed breed wolfdog you must have wolf blood in your history no more then five generations ago.

This doesn’t mean that there aren’t breeds created by breeding certain dogs with wolves and each other. We have several breeding records that show that this was done frequently and often. The German Shepherd is a relatively unusual breed, having wolf blood in it’s history a mere 90 years ago. Other northern breeds seem to have more wolf like characteristics including: huskies, chows, malamutes, and some lesser known breeds. Some of these have known breeding with wolves, others lesser known information. There are even some rarer, more recently excepted dog breeds that have wolf blood in them.

This practice is fairly common. Wolf characteristics are appealing to many dog breeders, although many of their characteristics are not that of what we consider a pleasant dog. Combining these animals with other dogs, passing down heritage, can create what we consider well-behaved dogs.

Wolfdogs in the Wild

Often in captivity wolves are bred with specific breeds to produce attractive and desirable wolfdogs. The most common of these breeds are the northern breeds including huskies, German shepherds, and malamutes. There is no set rule that it has to be this way, but it is general practice. There are times when you hear of mixes such as wolf, or wolf dog bred with black Labrador retriever or another unusual dog breed to mix a wolf with. This is primarily for the desire to have a look that is much like a wolf. If you breed it with a wolf like dog you will have a wolfdog that looks more like a wolf, where as anything else might view more like a mutt.

However, there are growing reports of wolf populations breeding with local dogs, both strays and pets. These are especially true in European wolves. This is a concern for many scientist and animal protective groups. Wild wolf populations are limited world wide and specific types of wolves are in small numbers. Mixing such animals with dog breeds could be what wipes the wolf from this planet, slowly replacing the packs with dogs.

The Future of the Wolfdog

The future of the wolfdog is uncertain. Many places have passed legislation on the owning of these animals. Yet their popularity is growing. Additionally their numbers in the wild are also growing. In the United States it is estimated that 300,000-500,000 of these animals exist, in varying percentages of wolf. Their popularity in other places in the world is also growing. It may be that more and more people understand the commitment of taking on such an animal, or it may be that exotic animal ownership is on the rise all over the place. Whichever is true, the future for the wolf looks mixed, and the future for wolfdogs looks promising.

After breeding Labrador Retrievers for close to fifteen years, I have managed to learn a few golden tips on how to
overcome some of the not-so-pleasant aspects of owning that new puppy. So many times I have new owners call me in absolute despair wanting to know how on earth they can get their newest family member to pee or poop ANYWHERE except on the floor of their home. For me, it is a devastating statistic that the number one reason puppies find themselves in shelters is due to house training issues. This is such a simple hindrance to overcome, so long as you know how. So, how do we keep you and your pup from any more accidents that may be starting to stretch your friendship?

House training puppies can be a monumental task if the owner is unaware of what specifically is needed to have their pup behaving in an acceptable manner. Think of it for a moment from the pups perspective…They have just approach from a litter where their mother has fed, cleaned and disciplined them. Life was fine simple there, they could play with their siblings and pee or poop wherever they liked AND (within the first two weeks of being born) mother would clean the mess up! Your pups mother would also lick and groom the pup clean of anything that stuck to their miniature body.

Then, you came along. You and your pup have arrived home…Minus the other litter mates and mother. Suddenly, the setting has changed, the social circle has changed and the rules are SO different to what your pup was used to. Your life has also changed now. You have a itsy-bitsy body that needs guidance and boundaries for it to understand what is needed in order to live harmoniously within your home.

The only truly unbeaten way to teach your pup how to be house trained is (drum-roll please…) for YOU to be trained! Nope, I don’t mean that we have to declare you to go potty and I’m positive you are house trained by now…However, if you feel you need a refresher on your own house breaking needs feel free to apply it to yourself

Pups and dogs in general are creatures of habit..A little like you and me. They thrive on regularity and flourish with repetitive actions. If you wanted to mumble your dog the command to sit, you would use that command every time you requested it of him. Using one term over and over will allow your dog to learn faster and with more success. The same is true for toilet training your pup or dog. If your pup learns that you are clear, consistent and easy to understand this will pave the way for everything your pup needs to know. If, however, he finds that you are repulsive, excited and inconsistent you may seek forward to a life with a dog that has no certain direction or boundaries on behaviour, and certainly no success at house training him or her.

Knowing the proper commands and having the correct setting for your pup to go potty is well-known to your pup or dog learning for life. If you are able to learn some proper techniques to consume, pick up on the signals your pup gives you and most of all…BE CONSISTENT, your pup will most certainly thrive under your care.

Remember, every oversight teaches your puppy the cross habit. Knowing what tools you must have for successful training will have your battle already half won. I constantly refer my unusual puppy owners to my website below for a fast and inexpensive guaranteed fire way to combat the potty accidents, and to achieve a rewarding and satisfying relationship with your pup up for life. I wish you years of enjoyment and puppy potty training success!

This is a misconception, since guard dog training falls into one of three categories: personal protection, sentry, or attack dog.

Personal protection dogs, or alarm dogs, will alert the owner when there is an intruder or something suspicious is happening. Their loud, aggressive bark signals the owner that the situation needs attention. They are trained to protect their family and territory in a defensive way, and may jump, whisper, recall (hold without biting), or chase. It is not part of their training to bite, maim, or ruin, although they may choose to do so on their own if the owner is physically threatened.

Sentry dogs are trained to patrol and defend a fenced area or empty building without a handler. They are often employed in shipyards and warehouses. These dogs are trained to take action when they glance an intruder and will attack indiscriminately.

Attack dogs are often used by military forces or the police. They are trained to respond to physical aggression or a sudden movement and are potential killers. Attack guard dogs should only be handled by experts and must never be family pets. Owning a dog for protection who will attack will put the owner and his family in danger, since attack dogs may turn on their own family. Even innocent gestures may cause them to attack. The owner is also subject to lawsuits or arrest if his dog attacks another person.

Some breeds of dogs have shown exceptional ability as guard dogs for family protection. Large dogs with intimidating reputations and appearances, they make excellent protection dogs and family pets when properly and professionally trained. Dogs bred for their guarding instincts tend to have dominant personalities and need owners who will provide strong leadership.

German Shepherds are often trained as K-9 attack dogs by the police and military which has given them a reputation as mean, aggressive killers. With proper socialization and personal protection training, they make excellent family pets. They are alert, intelligent, and good with children. Many dog trainers judge the German Shepherd one of the best guard dog breeds.

Doberman Pinschers have a strong natural instinct to protect their “pack” family and territory, but this breed is not for everybody. This breed needs an owner who is not afraid of him and all family members need to learn how to handle the dog properly. Dobermans need thorough, consistent training from an early age, and should be with their families, not left alone in the serve yard. A well-trained Doberman Pinscher can be a gentle, loving family pet that will aggressively defend his family when necessary.

Chow Chows are usually well-mannered dogs, but have a strong protective instinct. They often become “one-person” dogs but will get along well with children and other household animals if raised with them from an early age. Often stubborn, independent and willful, they need firm, early obedience training. Breeders have been attempting to produce a more “family-friendly” temperament in this breed, and a well-bred and well-trained Chow can make a substantial family pet.

Boxers are clownish, people loving dogs that seem to possess the ability to read people’s character. They may welcome strangers who seem non-threatening, but will defend their owners and territory if they feel the need. High-spirited dogs that need to be trained not to jump on everyone, they do well with older children. They are likely to knock down small children with their rowdy play.

Giant Schnauzers are not as well-liked in the United States as some other breeds, but have proven themselves as first-rate guard dogs in European countries. Giant, noteworthy dogs with dominant personalities, Giant Schnauzers can be high-spirited. They require obedience training from an early age and are not suited for homes with pre-teen children.

Rottweilers are massive, powerful dogs. Calm, courageous, and protective of their families, they will fiercely defend their owners. Rotts need careful training as puppies so they do not become overly aggressive. Obedience training for this breed should begin at three months of age; if the Rott is allowed to become the pack leader in the family there may be tragic consequences. This breed is among the top of the list of dog bite fatalities. Do not choose this breed if you have pre-teen children in the home.

Although not traditionally bred as working dogs, Great Danes make marvelous guard dogs simply by virtue of their imposing appearance. They are one of the gentlest of dog breeds. Playful and patient with children, Gigantic Danes savor people and want to be around them. They will bark when important but only become aggressive if the situation calls for it. They are good with other dogs when raised around them. This breed needs obedience training at an early age so the owner can control this giant dog when he reaches full size.

The owner should never try to verbalize a personal protection guard dog himself. Improper technique may result in a dangerous dog. Give the dog basic obedience training for control as a young puppy, using positive reinforcement as a reward. Discourage overly rough or aggressive play, and never leave any dog alone with young children. Even innocent play can be dangerous with a large dog who doesn’t know his own strength. When the dog is about six months of age, enroll him in a personal protection obedience program with a trained professional who excels in this field.

Victoria Stilwell stars on Animal Planet’s It’s Me or the Dog. But she also does a show, It’s Me or the Tubby Dog. In a particular episode on dog weight loss, dog training expert Victoria Stilwell visited three people who had very chunky dogs. According to the veterinarian, these dogs were double their normal weight.

Victoria Stilwell explained that despite what the dog owners feel is an act of love, overfeeding a dog is an act of cruelty in its maintain unique way. If you have an overweight dog, its life span is being prick dramatically short. If your dog is overweight and you aren’t feeding it much, you can bet that your fat dog is finding food on its own, such as the case with obese dog Hattie.

But maybe you deliberately feed your obese dog, such as the case with Gizmo. And then Jess’s owner seemed to provide much of the feeding without even realizing it, continually putting handfuls of food to the animal’s mouth while going about her business.

Hattie lives in a house with a woman and two young girls. The beagle, which was being fed just once a day in the a.m., was caught on videotape raiding food in the kitchen. This canine also has ripped open the girls’ lunch bags that were left on chairs. Solution? Keep food out of the dog’s arrive, and feed the pet controlled portions once in the morning and then again in the evening so that the animal doesn’t feel deprived.

To get her point across, Victoria Stilwell establish a large bowl of candy before the girls, then said they couldn’t have any. She then began eating brownies before the kids and offered them some, then pulled it away at the last moment, explaining that this temptation is what Hattie goes through every day when food is left within advance. The video showed Hattie getting its paws atop a kitchen counter and retrieving leftover food.

In the case of Gizmo the Chihuahua, Victoria Stilwell explained that the chocolate that Gizmo was getting was toxic. Furthermore, this was the only dog of the owners’ six total canines that never got any exercise. Gizmo was also routinely being fed arresting Indian food.

Victoria Stilwell showed Jess’s owner the equivalent, in human consumption, of what this dog was being fed every week. Laid out on a table were platefuls of food, enough to feed a football team. The owner was stunned.

Victoria Stilwell then began explaining the importance of adding vegetables and fruit to a dog’s diet.

These paunchy dogs were weighed about five months later. Jess and Hattie still had significant weight problems. Victoria had Jess’s owner walk around wearing an 11-pound sack on her back so that she could feel the strain that her 11-pound-overweight dog felt.

Hattie was sent to a “dog fat farm” for five weeks and came back a little slimmer, proving to her owner that this dog indeed can lose weight. But even after that, Hattie remained overweight. Victoria Stilwell then presented Hattie’s owner with blown-up photos of her two daughters’ faces — as they’d behold if the girls were fat. The girls thought it was hilarious, but their mother was moved to tears.

The demonstrate concluded with the kids and Victoria Stilwell on scooters (the kind where you propel with your feet while in a standing position), with a leashed Hattie in tow: Exercising your fat canine can be a fun activity.

So for anybody who has a fat dog and thinks nothing can be done about it, tune in to the next episode of It’s Me or the Stout Dog.

Bringing a modern dog into your household is very noteworthy like bringing a new child into the family. Like a child, a dog needs a great deal of structure and guidance initially. One tried and true method for accomplishing this is to utilize the crate training method. This is the process of providing your German shepherd with their own personal space by giving them a crate that they can spend time in. The crate has a door that you can shut which allows you to keep your dog in his crate (and out of trouble) during those times when you are not able to give him adequate supervision.

Benefits of Crate Training:

- Allows you to contain control over the dog’s environment including unsupervised access to certain parts of the house.
- Assists in housebreaking.
- Provides an easy plan to transport your dog in an environment that he is comfortable with.
- Provides your dog with a place of his own, which resembles the natural den dwellings canines use in the wild.

There is a variety of crates to choose from. You may select a hard plastic crate that provides more privacy and security. You may resolve to purchase a more open metal crate that allows you to crate your German shepherd without making him feel secluded. You can even find fabric crates that offer a cozier feel. All of these crates have their strong points. It is always a good idea to research the different crates available to you and recall the one that best meets the needs of you and your dog.

Make sure that the crate you choose has enough room for your dog to stand and turn around in, but for training purposes you don’t want to glean a crate that is much larger than that. The time needed for training can vary based on your dog’s age and adaptability. You will have much better success if you have exiguous training goals that provide your dog with many opportunities to make a training session successful.

Tips for building a bond between your German shepherd and his crate:

- Place the crate in a room where the humans of the house spend most of their time.
- Line the bottom of the crate with a towel or blanket that the dog can snuggle in.
- When placing your dog in the crate, always sing in a very cheerful voice.
- Entice him to enter the crate by himself with praise and treats. (Never force the dog to enter the crate!)
- Place a toy that your dog loves inside the crate.
- Feed your dog close to the crate.

Once your dog no longer seems disturbed when entering the crate, you are ready to start feeding him inside the crate. Start by placing his food just inside the crate. At each feeding, move the bowl further inside. When he seems comfortable eating his meals inside the crate, try shutting the door while he’s eating. In the beginning, let him out as soon as he has finished his meal. Then start gradually increasing the time he remains in the crate by a minute or two longer. It is well-known to originate sure he is happy during this time. He is still learning to like the crate, so you do not want him to feel trapped. However, if he does start crying you need to talk to him and calm him down, but don’t let him come out of the crate until he stops. If you immediately let him out as soon as he starts whining, he will learn that all he has to do is cry if he wants out of the crate.

Next you will start to condition your dog to start spending some non-meal time in the crate. Remember not to accelerate this or you will undo all of your hard work. Start by training him to enter the crate when asked to. You can do this by consistently using the same command and offering treats when done correctly. Initially you should consume most of your time sitting quietly reach the crate. Then start spending part of the training time in another room.
The key to success with this training method is patience and consistency. During each training session, start spending more time out of your dog’s site. Always start and waste the training session by remaining near the crate for a few minutes. And remember to only let your dog out of the crate while he is not whining or crying. When you feel like he will be fine in the crate for longer periods, you are ready to start leaving your dog in the crate when he sleeps at night or while you leave the house for short periods of time.

Tips for leaving your dog in his crate while you are away:

- Make sure he has plenty of drinking water
- Put a toy in the crate to keep him company.
- Do not construct your leaving an emotional affair. The longer your goodbye, the more he’ll dread it.
- When you return home, calmly let him out of the crate.
- So that the dog does not associate the entering the crate with your leaving, continue to put him in the crate periodically while you are home.

If you decide to crate your dog at night, it is a good idea to place the crate in your room so that he doesn’t feel completely isolated. Although this is also true for older dogs, it is especially important if your dog is less than six months old. Not only do they need the comfort of knowing that you are close by, but they also need to be able to let you know when they need to go outside. If your adult dog seems completely comfortable with sleeping in his crate, you can depart the crate to another station in your house if needed.

Although a crate can provide many amazing benefits to both you and your, make sure that you do not confine your dog too often. The crate is a small space and your dog may begin to feel trapped if he is not allowed plenty non-crate time. In other words, you shouldn’t crate your dog all day while you work and then again all night while you sleep. He needs more than just a few hours of freedom a day. Puppies should not be kept in crates for more than a few hours at any given time. And always make sure that you recall your dog outside when needed.
Crate training is just one of many methods you can use to train your dog, but many people have found that it is the diagram that works best for them and their canine friend. As long as you make the crate a trusted station that the dog is fond of, you will find that the crate can keep your dog safe and give you peace of mind while you are away. Training definitely takes time and energy, but if you are patient, consistent, and always remain positive, you will have a jubilant, great best friend.

Note: If your dog has separation dread, confining him to a crate is not a solution and is likely to aggravate the status. You can find alternative methods for working with separation anxiety from your veterinarian or through additional research.
